MEMO
επεξεργασίαThe name "Αγγελική" (aka Angelica) means in Greek the one whose physical beauty or character attributes derive from the angels. The word "angel" in Greek is written "άγγελος". The equivalent of the Greek letter "γ" in English is "g". My that I do not mean that "g" is the third letter of the English alphabet as "γ" is for the Greek. However, in Greeklish the letter "γ" is almost always replaced by "g". The spelling "Angeliki" is the result of confusion. People try to find the middle ground between "Angelika" and "Aggeliki." Since, however, it is used by almost everybody as correct I decided to avoid swimming againt the tide. If you wanted to pronounce correctly the name "Αγγελική" in English, you should pronounce "A" as "A" in Athens, "γγ" as "gh" in ghost, "ε" E in Erasmus, "λι" as Lee, and "κή" as "ki" in killer. The accent (intonation?) goes to the "κή." In order to write "Αγγελική" in "proper" English a new spelling would be needed.

Δίφρος, Diphros
επεξεργασίαHello George, would you happen to know if there is a plural to Diphros? Having the images in a category in the Category:Ancient Greek chairs seems logical to me. Thank you ever so much George. Have an anjoyable day in Athens :-) Lotje (συζήτηση) 06:35, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, Lotje, it is diphrοι (δίφροι in Greek). I guess you hafe confused it with "diphra (δίφρα) just like me. In this case this is what the A.I. what (Google Bard) has to sayː
- "The difference between "δίφροι" and "δίφρα" lies in the grammatical gender of the noun "δίφρος". "Δίφρος" is a masculine noun, so its plural form is "δίφροι". "Δίφρα", on the other hand, is a neuter noun, so its plural form is "τα δίφρα".
- In the case of "δίφρος", the nominative singular is "δίφρος". "Δίφρος" follows the declension of nouns in -ος with more than one syllable. The plural of these nouns is formed by adding the ending -οί.
- Therefore, the plural of "δίφρος" is δίφροι, with a phonological change of the final -ος to -οι.
- In the case of "δίφρα", the nominative singular is "δίφρον". "Δίφρα" follows the declension of nouns in -ον with more than one syllable. The plural of these nouns is formed by adding the ending -α.
- Therefore, the plural of "δίφρα" is τα δίφρα, with a phonological change of the final -ον to -α.
- In other words, the difference between "δίφροι" and "τα δίφρα" lies in the following:
- "Δίφρος" is a masculine noun, so its plural form is "δίφροι".
- "Τα δίφρα" is a neuter noun, so its plural form is "τα δίφρα".
- For example, we can say:
- "Οι δίφροι είναι δύο ξύλινα σκαμπό." (The two chairs are two wooden stools.)
- "Τα δίφρα είναι δύο δίφροι." (The two pairs of chairs are two chairs.)
- In the first case, we are referring to two chairs as two separate objects. In the second case, we are referring to two pairs of chairs as a set of two objects.
- Summarily, the difference between "οι δίφροι" and "τα δίφρα" is as follows:
- "Δίφρος" is a masculine noun, therefore its plural form is "δίφροι".
- "Τα δίφρα" is a neuter noun, therefore its plural form is "τα δίφρα".
- In the first case, we are referring to two chairs as two separate objects.
- In the second case, we are referring to two pairs of chairs as a set of two objects."
